NSW: Work bans and possible further action over Shell fire
Work bans are in place at the Shell oil refinery at Clyde in western Sydney after a
blaze sparked safety concerns.
The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union has imposed bans on work such as
welding until Shell hands down its preliminary investigation report into the incident
tomorrow.
The union says bans will continue and further action may be taken if it is not satisfied
with the report.
Union New South Wales energy secretary LORRAINE USHER says it is only luck that prevented
workers being killed in the fire, when the plant was shut down for maintenance.
Health and safety watchdog WorkCover says it is undertaking an independent review,
with officers expected to visit the site tomorrow.
Shell has said the fire on Friday night was not considered suspicious and did not pose
any risk to public safety.
