Vic: Trams produce more greenhouse gases than cars: study
New university research has found that Melbourne's iconic trams emit more greenhousegas emissions than cars and should be replaced with buses.
An RMIT University report's found trams are the worst transport polluters, producinghigher levels of carbon dioxide per passenger kilometre than trains, buses and cars.
Senior engineering lecturer Dr ED BOYAPATI, who co-ordinated the independent study, says trams release up to 18 times more gas emissions than buses.
He says his findings suggest that on environmental grounds, buses are far superior to trams.
He says contrary to popular belief, trams aren't such a clean and green form of public transport.
But the Public Transport Users Association has slammed the report calling the findings nonsense.
